Description:The 1980s marked a major turning point in the evolution of global Chinese theatre. Across East and Southeast Asia, Chinese communities began exploring localized identities and redefining cultural and ethnic belonging. During this period, the creative practices of directors and playwrights such as Gao Xingjian, Danny Yung, Stan Lai, and Kuo Pao Kun profoundly shaped the development of theatre in Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Amid the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War, these artists integrated local, foreign, and Chinese cultural elements into their works, challenging the notion of a singular “Chineseness.” This talk explores how theatre and performance have helped weave identity and facilitate the transregional flow of culture and ideas across diasporic Chinese communities—initiating cross-regional dialogue through performance even before cross-strait relations began to thaw. |
